🧬🌌 “GENES AND THE MEANING OF LIFE” — BUT CAN ATHEISM EXPLAIN WHY THERE IS ANYTHING AT ALL?
Evolutionary biologist and prominent atheist Richard Dawkins is touring with a lecture titled Genes and the Meaning of Life.
For Christians, that title opens the door to some of humanity’s biggest questions:
Why does anything exist? Where did life ultimately come from? Why is the universe intelligible? And what grounds meaning, morality and consciousness?
These questions deserve more than slogans from either side.
FOUR BIG QUESTIONS FOR A NATURALISTIC WORLDVIEW
1. Why is there something rather than nothing?
Modern cosmology investigates the universe’s earliest known conditions and development, but the deeper philosophical question of why reality exists at all remains debated. Christianity answers by pointing to an eternal Creator who is not dependent upon the universe.
2. How did the first life arise from nonliving chemistry?
Evolution explains how populations of living organisms change after life exists; the origin of the first life is a separate field known as abiogenesis. Researchers have proposed natural pathways, but scientists have not yet established a complete historical account of how life first arose on Earth.
3. Why does the universe have an orderly, intelligible structure?
Nature exhibits regularities that physics describes mathematically. Scientists can investigate how those laws operate, while philosophers and theologians continue debating why such laws exist and whether their apparent order points beyond nature.
4. Can matter alone fully explain consciousness, reason and morality?
Neuroscience has established strong relationships between brain activity and conscious experience, but the nature of consciousness—and questions about objective morality, reason and meaning—remain major subjects of philosophical debate.
Dawkins and other atheists do not generally describe these unanswered questions as “miracles.” They argue that gaps in current scientific knowledge do not justify inserting a supernatural explanation.
Christians make a different argument: God is not merely an explanation inserted wherever science currently lacks an answer. Classical arguments for God concern deeper questions about why contingent reality exists, why nature is intelligible, and what ultimately grounds reason, morality and purpose.
That brings us back to the phrase:
“THE MEANING OF LIFE.”
Dawkins can certainly discuss meaning as an atheist; many atheists argue that human beings can create or discover meaningful lives without belief in God.
Christianity makes a different claim.
It says our ultimate meaning is not something we invent for ourselves—it comes from the One who created us.
“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” — John 1:3
The real debate isn't whether atheists can experience love, purpose or meaning. Clearly they can.
The deeper question is:
🔥 Is meaning ultimately something human beings create—or does human life possess an objective purpose because we were created intentionally by God?
Christianity answers:
God created the universe.
God created life.
God created humanity in His image.
And our ultimate purpose is found in Him. ✝️
