What studying and practicing health has taught me

My journey as an advocate has taught me that understanding health requires us to look beyond the diagnosis.

Studying health provides important knowledge about disease, prevention and healthcare. Practical experience also reminds us that health is experienced by real people, within families, communities and wider social environments.

This perspective has strengthened my appreciation for:

- Prevention: addressing health risks before they develop into more serious problems.
- Health education: helping people access and understand information that supports informed decisions.
- Community health: recognising the conditions and circumstances that influence people's wellbeing.
- People-centred care: seeing the person beyond the condition they present with.

For me, health is not only about treating illness. It is also about understanding people, supporting prevention and contributing to healthier communities.

This is one of the perspectives I hope to keep developing and sharing through my work as a health professional and advocate.

What has studying or working in your field taught you that goes beyond the classroom?
