St. Thomas of Villanueva, a distinguished Augustinian bishop, was born in Fuentellana, Castile, Spain, into a miller's family. He excelled academically at the University of Alcala and became a professor there at the young age of twenty-six. Although offered a prestigious position at the University of Salamanca, Thomas chose a religious life and joined the Order of St. Augustine in 1516.

He was ordained in 1520 and quickly took on important roles within the Order, serving as prior in various cities and as provincial for Andalusia and Castile. Additionally, Thomas served as a chaplain to Emperor Charles V. Under his leadership, the first Augustinian missionaries were sent to the New World, playing a significant role in the evangelization of what is now Mexico.

In 1544, Thomas declined the position of bishop of Granada and was appointed as the archbishop of Valencia. With the archdiocese having been without leadership for nearly a century, he worked diligently to restore its spiritual and material well-being.

His dedication to the poor was unwavering; he served as the grand almoner, established schools for the needy and for the children of new converts, and organized priestly missions among the Moors. Known for his personal holiness and ascetic lifestyle, Thomas was a strong supporter of the Tridentine reforms in Spain, even though he did not attend the Council of Trent. His lasting legacy continues to inspire many through his commitment to faith and charity.
