The imbalance has even contributed to demand for so-called “husband-for-an-hour” services, where people can hire professionals to handle household repairs, maintenance, and other practical tasks.

But behind the striking statistics is a much broader demographic challenge. Latvia is also dealing with population decline, an aging society, migration, and significant public-health concerns.

The gender imbalance is therefore more than a surprising statistic—it is part of a larger demographic shift that could have long-term implications for Latvia’s society and economy.
