CAN EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVE PILLS CAUSE INFERTILITY?
This is one question many women are afraid to ask.
Emergency contraceptive pills such as levonorgestrel do not cause infertility or permanently damage your ability to become pregnant in the future. Fertility returns without delay after taking them.
However, that doesn't mean you should use emergency pills as your regular method of contraception.
Frequent use can cause temporary effects such as:
• Irregular or unexpected bleeding
• Changes in the timing of your next period
• Nausea or vomiting
• Fatigue or headache
These effects are generally temporary. WHO notes that repeated use does not have known long-term health risks, but someone needing emergency contraception frequently may benefit from choosing a more reliable regular contraceptive method.
So the myth, “Emergency pills will make you barren.” is Not true.
But remember: emergency contraception prevents pregnancy; it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
