37 DEAD IN NSCDC CUSTODY, MINNA

Dozens of suspected artisanal miners arrested by NSCDC in Wushishi-Lukoto / M.I. Wushishi Housing Estate area near Minna on Sept 15-16.

Early morning Sept 17, 37 found dead in detention. Bodies at General Hospital Minna for autopsy.

Interior Minister has suspended Niger NSCDC Commandant, ordered investigation. Niger State Police also investigating.

Cause of death yet to be confirmed. Authorities urge calm.
