The palace of the Alaafin of Oyo announced the death and burial of its prized tortoise that outlived several Alaafins in the palace. The tortoise, called Baba in the palace was said to have died at the ripe old age of 420 years.

But how were they able to determine Baba's age? Yes, the old Oyo empire was said to have come into being around 14th or 15th century (1300 - 1400 CE) which means the empire was actually much older than the tortoise.

In any case 400 to 500 years ago were education and diligent record keeping already such established features of the old Empire for them to have known Baba's age?
