What is happening?

Few weeks ago,
The Federal Government through NAFDAC has banned the production, sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages in sachets and PET/glass bottles *smaller than 200ml*. Full enforcement started *December 2025*. No more extension will be given.

This ban does NOT affect all alcohol — only spirit drinks in small sachets and bottles below 200ml.

WHY did NAFDAC ban it? (The Reasons)

According to NAFDAC DG Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye:

1. *Too cheap, too hidden, too accessible:* Sachets are affordable and easy to conceal from parents and teachers. Students were even hiding them in schools.

2. *Targeting the wrong people:*
It drives misuse among minors and commercial drivers.

3. *Social damage:*
Linked to domestic violence, road accidents, school dropouts and other social vices.

4. *Global standard:*
Nigeria signed the WHO Global Strategy to Reduce Harmful Use of Alcohol (2010) to protect children from alcohol.

5. *Long warning:*
Industry was given 5 years since the 2018 to phase it out — deadline moved from 2023 to 2024 to Dec 2025.

What are the BENEFITS?

1. *PROTECT OUR YOUTH:*
If children are not exposed, they live healthier and avoid early addiction.

2. *REDUCE ABUSE & ADDICTION:*
Makes alcohol less accessible, curbing misuse.

3. *SAVE LIVES:*
Fewer alcohol-related road accidents, violence, and health burden on families and hospitals.

4. *BETTER FUTURE:*
Less school dropouts and anti-social behaviour among youth.

5. *Public health over profit:*
As NAFDAC said, “We cannot trade public health for short-term economic benefits”.
