It can work when:

* Clear boundaries are maintained.
* They don't hide the friendship from their partners.
* They communicate honestly when feelings or situations change.
* The friendship doesn't interfere with their romantic relationships.

It becomes a problem when:

* One person secretly hopes the friendship will become a relationship.
