My personal ideology is that a favour is measured not only by what someone does for you, but also by when they do it. Someone who lends you money when you truly need it has shown you favour, because their help came at a time when it mattered.

A loan can still be a favour. The fact that you eventually repay the money does not remove the favour. What matters is that the person made the money available to you when you genuinely needed it.
