BECAUSE OF WHAT ONE PERSON DID

Sometimes, the greatest injustice is not what one person did, but how we allow what one person did to become the reason we hate everyone who resembles them.

Because of the 1966 coup led by Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu, in which Sir Ahmadu Bello and other Northern leaders were killed, some people have carried hatred toward the Igbo—as though every Igbo person was responsible.

Because one man molested his daughter, people say all men are evil.

Because one woman abused her daughter, some conclude that women should never be trusted with children.

One policeman takes a bribe—all policemen are corrupt.
One politician steals—all politicians are thieves.
One pastor fails—all pastors are hypocrites.
One person from a particular race commits a crime—the whole race is judged.

But one person's character is not the character of an entire group.

Your tribe does not make you guilty of another person's actions.
Your gender does not define your character.
Your profession does not determine your integrity.
Your race does not determine your morality.

Hold the guilty accountable, but don't make the innocent carry their guilt.

The person who hurt you may belong to a group, but the group is not the person who hurt you.

If we continue judging millions because of what one person did, we will keep creating hatred where there should be understanding.

Judge the action. Punish the offender. But don't condemn the innocent.

Because sometimes, the person you are judging today is completely innocent of the thing you are angry about.
