THE PROMISE OF GOD CONCERNING THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS FROM THE DEAD (4)
Paul made a defense of the resurrection of Jesus
1st Corinthians 15:12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
Paul’s submission of the resurrection of Jesus was from the scriptures (prophecies of the prophets in the Old Testament), and that was what was preached. But some came preaching contrary to the fulfillment of the promise of God of Christ resurrection.
This is also seen in his epistle to Timothy.
2nd Timothy 2:17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; vs 18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.
Those who preach contrary to the resurrection of Jesus want to make void the fulfilled promise of God.
1st Corinthians 15:13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: Vs 14 And if Christ be not risen, then isour preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Vs 15Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. Vs 16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: Vs 17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Vs 18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. Vs 19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
Paul emphasises the fact of the resurrection of the physical body.
1st Corinthians 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that slept.
Jesus is the first to be raised from the dead physically.
Unlike in the four gospels where people were raised from the dead but eventually died (Jairus daughter in Mark 5:, and the case of Lazarus in John 11).
Jesus was raised from the dead, never to die again.
Romans 6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
Peter said he cannot be held by death.
Acts 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
Hence the model of the resurrection of sons.
Colossians 1:18And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
The word, “firstborn” implies a model.
At the resurrection, he was not called the only begotten.
Hebrews 2:10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
The word bringing implies to lead, to bear, to bring from one place to another.
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of ourfaith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
The word author was translated from a word that implies beginning, a founder, an originator.
Jesus is the foundation Son. We are his kind.
This fact was hidden in Isaiah’ prophecy.
Isaiah 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
The word prolong was translated from a word that means to delay, to lengthen. This refers to the resurrection.
Jesus is the model son.
The Son in the incarnation (only begotten) has a different office in his resurrection (firstborn/ first begotten).
Thus, Paul had to remind Timothy of this reality of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.
2nd Timothy 2:8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:
The crux of the gospel is the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.
I acknowledge the fulfillment of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. I am a son of God and alive forever in Christ.
