COULD A COMMON KNEE SURGERY MAKE ARTHRITIS WORSE?
A 10-year study found that partial meniscectomy — surgery to remove damaged meniscus tissue — **did not provide better pain relief or knee function** than placebo surgery.
Researchers also found **faster osteoarthritis progression** and a higher chance of further knee surgery.
Some meniscus tears may be linked to aging rather than being the main cause of pain.
The findings support trying **exercise, physical therapy and other non-surgical treatments** when appropriate before surgery.
