Sometimes, the most painful stories are the ones nobody hears.

A recent report of a father allegedly sexually abusing his daughter since she was 10 is a painful reminder that many injustices against the girl child happen behind closed doors. Fear, shame, confusion and trauma can keep children silent, especially when they do not know their rights or fear they will not be believed.

Every girl has the right to safety, dignity, protection and freedom from violence. Yet many continue to suffer in silence while the world remains unaware.

This is why Speak Wednesday matters. We speak about the hidden realities affecting women and girls, raise awareness of their rights, and encourage families and communities to listen, believe, protect and act.
We must stop asking, “Why didn't she speak?” and start asking, “Why wasn't she safe enough to speak?”

The girl child deserves a childhood free from violence, fear and torture. Protecting her is everyone’s responsibility.
