NINE YEARS LATER, THE LESSON REMAINS

Nine years ago, three people — Sodienye Mbatumukeke, Excel Destiny Naabe, and Joy Eluwa — were reportedly arrested and sentenced to death over the killing of a Jumia dispatch rider who had come to their apartment along Ada George Road, Port Harcourt, to deliver an iPhone 7 they had ordered on pay-on-delivery.

According to reports surrounding the case, the dispatch rider was killed and his body disposed of in a soak-away.

Think about that for a moment.

A human life was lost over a phone.

The tragedy is that the iPhone 7 was only a temporary possession. Since then, Apple has released generations of newer iPhones, all while technology has continued to move forward.

That is the danger of greed, desperation and the pressure to maintain a lifestyle you cannot afford.

No phone, car, clothes, party or social-media image is worth a human life — or throwing away your own future.

Be content with what you have. Work for what you want. Live within your means.

Don't destroy your life trying to impress people who may not even remember you tomorrow.

A fake lifestyle can have a very real cost.
