🩸 UGU LEAVES AND "BLOOD BOOSTING"
Does drinking "ugu juice" really increase blood?
Many Nigerians believe that squeezing ugu leaves into juice can quickly boost blood. But what does science actually say?
Ugu can contribute to healthy blood production, but it is NOT a magic blood booster.
Ugu (Telfairia occidentalis) contains nutrients including iron and other minerals, which are important for making haemoglobin and red blood cells. Studies in animals have also found increases in haemoglobin after consuming ugu leaves.
However, most of the evidence is from animal or laboratory studies, and there is not strong evidence that drinking raw ugu juice rapidly corrects anaemia in humans.
So if someone is anaemic, ugu can be part of a nutritious diet, but it should not replace proper treatment.
Anaemia can have different causes — including iron deficiency, blood loss, infections, vitamin deficiencies and other medical conditions.
Ugu is food, not a guaranteed cure for anaemia.
Have you ever heard someone say "Drink ugu juice, your blood will increase immediately"?
Do you believe it works?
