Demonizing polygamy in a movie titled Polygamist is more than entertainment—it can become a promotion of neocolonial thinking and a dysfunctional interpretation of African polygamous culture.
Traditional African polygamy was not simply about a man collecting women. In many societies, it was a structured family system governed by responsibilities, kinship, communal expectations and obligations toward wives and children.
Reducing it to nothing more than lust, oppression or dysfunction ignores the historical and cultural structures that made it function within those societies.
You don't have to glorify polygamy to understand it.
Criticism without cultural understanding is not enlightenment; sometimes, it is simply another form of historical erasure.
