In Memory of a Great Man

This message is dedicated to a great man I grew up adoring for his wisdom.

Evening family. I know that not everyone, especially those who are not Yoruba, will recognise the name Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, but I want to speak about him today, to pay him the respect he truly deserves as he departs from us.

Growing up, he was one of the men every Yoruba person admired on screen, the kind of man whose face alone on a movie poster was enough to make people stop and want to know what the story was about.

You may ask, what was the reason behind this? The answer is simple. It was not only because he was a man of action, but because he was a man filled with wisdom. He spoke calmly, he spoke with respect, and he commanded respect in return simply by the way he carried himself.

I never had the privilege of meeting him in person, but based on everything I have heard people say about him over the years, and everything I have watched of him on screen, you could tell, even from a distance, that he was not only a humble man, but a genuinely kind one too.

For over four decades, he gave himself fully to Yoruba cinema, becoming a name almost every household in this part of the world grew up knowing and loving.

One thing remains certain through all of this: it was not the cancer that ultimately took him away from us. It was the Owner of life, God Himself, who called him home to rest.

Sun re o, Sir T. Goodnight, sir. May your soul continue to rest on. We love you, and we will not forget you.
