Personally, I don’t believe unions are necessary in every workplace. What companies need is reasonable, fair and responsible management, especially when it comes to salaries, welfare, remuneration, working conditions and employee rights.
I have worked in organisations where unions existed, and honestly, some of the things I witnessed were counterproductive. Instead of creating harmony between management and employees, union activities sometimes created unnecessary tension, confrontation and distractions.
If management is fair, transparent and willing to listen to employees, many workplace disputes can be resolved without the need for a union.
Let us build a Nigeria where both employers and employees understand their responsibilities and respect each other.
