It takes more than money to work a 12-hour shift without eventually feeling trapped. Circumstances may make it necessary at first but in the long run, fulfillment often matters more than the paycheck.

At that point, you usually face two choices: quit or endure it. Enduring it can be dangerous because, over time, people burn out and eventually break. Quitting, however, is not always simple either. Beyond what you earn, there is the person you are becoming. Leaving to pursue what you truly want may require rebuilding your skills, identity, and career, and that can be difficult.

So where do we stand?

When considering a job, your circumstances may make the salary the priority. But don't stop there. Ask yourself, "Who am I becoming by taking this job?" If the answer aligns with the person you want to become, then embrace the opportunity. If it doesn't, you may still choose to take the job but have your exit plan from day one A job should not only pay your bills; it should either build your future or fund your journey to it.
