The Executive Chairman of Ukwuani Local Government, Hon. C.S Possible Ajede, PhD, has imposed an immediate ban on all roadblocks and unauthorized revenue collection across the LGA, warns that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
Barr. Ajede announced the immediate ban on roadblocks today during a strategic security meeting in his office.
According to the Ukwuani Council Chairman, the ban on roadblocks is in compliance with the Delta State Government's directive to abolish illegal roadblocks and intensify the crackdown on extortion in the guise of revenue collection.
While announcing the decision, the Chairman said no individual, group or organization has been authorized to erect roadblocks or obstruct public roads under the guise of generating revenue for the state or the council.
"Blocking of roads must stop. There should be no roadblocks anywhere in Ukwuani Local Government under the guise of revenue drive; the Delta State Government has said no consultant has been engaged for revenue drive and as a Council we have not engaged anyone" he said.
Speaking further, Barr Ajede stressed that all public roads must remain free to ensure the unhindered movement of residents and motorists.
The Ukwuani Council Boss also ordered community leaders, youth bodies and other stakeholders to immediately cease from the collection of unauthorized levies or fees from residents and contractors.
Barr. Ajede further clarified that the council has neither appointed nor engaged any consultant or individual to collect revenue on its behalf, even as he called on the public to disregard anyone making such claims.
The Chief Security Officer of the Local Government has specifically directed officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), commercial motorcycle operators and other transport groups to discontinue every form of roadblocks even as he advised that, they fashion out other means of managing their internal workings and defaulting members.
To ensure strict compliance, security agencies have been directed to arrest and prosecute anyone found erecting illegal roadblocks, impersonating government revenue agents or engaging in any form of unauthorized revenue collection.
Meanwhile, Barr. Ajede has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to maintaining law and order across the LGA.
