BEYOND THE DATA: Why foreign banks have dominated Nigeria's top capital importation channels for seven years

Foreign banks have sustained their dominance as channels for Nigeria’s capital importation for seven years, reinforcing their position as the preferred intermediaries for international investors entering the country.

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), foreign banks, among the top 10 institutions, processed a combined $8.97 billion in capital inflows in Q1 2026, compared with $1.23 billion channelled through Nigerian banks.

This means that foreign institutions accounted for about 88 percent of the $10.2 billion handled by the leading banks during the quarter.
