The Milky Way’s Secret Graveyard: Up to 170 Million Black Holes Are Hiding in Plain Sight
Black holes are the ultimate cosmic ghosts—almost completely invisible, swallowing light and leaving only faint clues of their presence. For decades, astronomers have wondered just how many of these stellar-mass monsters lurk in our home galaxy. Now a new simulation suggests the answer is staggering: around 170 million.
A team led by astrophysicist Tom Wagg of the Flatiron Institute rewound the clock 13.6 billion years and modeled the entire history of the Milky Way. They tracked how stars were born, lived, and died, watching countless massive stars collapse into black holes. The result? Roughly one new stellar-mass black hole has been forged every 80 years on average. But the real “baby boom” happened long ago, when the galaxy was forming stars far more furiously than it does today. Most of these black holes have been drifting through the galactic underworld for billions of years.
Here’s the twist that makes the picture even more dramatic: black holes rarely stay where they are born. When a massive star explodes as a supernova, the blast is often lopsided. That asymmetry delivers a powerful “kick,” flinging the newborn black hole across the galaxy like a cosmic soccer ball. Lighter black holes get the strongest kicks and travel farthest, while heavier ones tend to stay closer to the galactic plane because leftover material falls back and softens the recoil. As a result, the population of black holes forms a thicker, more extended “layer” above and below the Milky Way’s disk than ordinary stars do.
This invisible census isn’t just a cool number. Mapping the masses and trajectories of these black holes will help scientists decode exactly how stars explode and how black holes form. If future observations match the team’s predictions, it will prove that sophisticated simulations can reliably reconstruct the hidden history of entire galaxies.
So the next time you look up at the night sky, remember: for every star you see, there may be many more dark corpses of stars silently wandering the void—170 million of them, quietly shaping the gravity of the Milky Way from the shadows.
