WHAT IS THE EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION REQUIRED TO CONTEST FOR THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA?

ANSWER:
For the avoidance of doubt, Section 131(d) of the 1999 Constitution (as altered) defines the basic educational qualification required to contest for the office of the president of Nigeria as being EDUCATED UP TO AT LEAST SCHOOL CERTIFICATE LEVEL OR ITS EQUIVALENT. For ease of reference, the provision reads:

“A person shall be qualified for election to the office of President if — ... (d) he has been educated up to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent.”

QUESTION 2:
WHAT DOES "SCHOOL CERTIFICATE OR ITS EQUIVALENT" MEAN?

ANSWER:
To prevent any ambiguity or an iota of doubt, Section 318(1) (SUPRA) defines “School Certificate or its equivalent" to mean:

1. Primary School Leaving Certificate

2. Grade II Teacher’s Certificate

3. Evidence of education up to Secondary School level

4. ANY OTHER QUIFICATION ACCEPTED BY INEC

QUESTION 3:
MUST A CANDIDATE PROVIDE THEIR PRIMARY SCHOOL, SECONDARY SCHOOL, AND UNIVERSITY CERTIFICATES TOGETHER TO QUALIFY TO CONTEST FOR THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA?

ANSWER:
No. Any one of the 4 qualifications listed above suffices.
