There are 21 languages spoken as first languages in Akwa Ibom State."[16] However, comparing different sources show there are slightly over 21 languages. They are as follows (in alphabetical order) with the LGAs in which they are spoken:
1. Annang - Abak, Essien Udim, Ikot Ekpene, Oruk-Anam, and Ukanafun LGAs
2. Ebughu - Mbo and Oron LGAs
3. Efai - Mbo LGA
4. Efik - Itu, Oron, Uruan LGAs
5. Ekid - Eket and Esit Eket LGAs
6. Enwang - Mbo LGA
7. Etebi - Esit Eket LGA
8. Ibibio - Etinan, Ikono, Ini, Ikot Abasi, Itu, Mkpat Enin, Nsit Atai, Nsit-Ubium, Onna, Uruan and Uyo LGAs.
9. Ibino (Ibọnọ) - Ibeno LGA
10. Ibuoro - Ikono and Itu LGAs
11. Idere - Itu LGA
12. Ika - Ika LGA
13. Iko - Eastern Obolo LGA
14. Ilue - Oron LGA
15. Itu Mbon Uso - Ikono and Itu LGAs
16. Iwerre - Ini LGA
17. Nkari - Ini and Ikono LGA
18. Obolo (Andoni) - Eastern Obolo and Ibeno LGAs
19. Okobo - Okobo LGA
20. Oro - Oron LGA
