For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the LORD. Jeremiah 39:18
This message to Ebedmelech the Ethiopian proves something once again: God does not owe any person. Yesterday we read about how he rescued Jeremiah from the devilish wish of the princes of Judah to kill him by throwing him into a pit full of mire. We acknowledged Ebedmelech’s courage in letting the king know that what those princes did was wrong. And we acknowledged his allowing God to use him to do a good deed for His prophet.
Today, we are seeing the reward of everyone’s actions in this chapter. The princes and king Zedekiah that refused to listen to Jeremiah got their judgement come on them in one fell swoop. But Ebedmelech that chose to do right in the midst of that corruption got God’s reward of being spared from that same judgement that came on the others. His trust in God got his life spared and put him in a place of positive reward and acknowledgment from God for his good deeds.
This tells us clearly that it is better to stand out with God than stand with the wicked so as to blend in with the majority. Most times, that leads to doom.
God gives a long rope for people to repent; and some assume it is because God is too weak to act. No. He is just too kind to see us suffer; so, He continues to give us the opportunity to do right and take the needed action to redeem ourselves from destruction.
This speaks to us if we are in government or position of privilege. The fact that many people are doing the wrong thing doesn’t mean everybody is. You can stand out and use your position of privilege to do right by God. When the judgement of the wicked in that your government comes, which will surely come, you and your generations will be spared from God’s wrath just because you choose to do right.
That grace comes from accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Saviour in our generation. If you are yet to, this is another opportunity. Will you use it wisely and take action?
Jesus is Lord!
