Scientists say Earth is on track to become uninhabitable. Warming is increasing at an exponential rate — and far faster than predicted.

A scientific assessment published in the journal One Earth warns that key components of the planet’s climate system may be significantly closer to destabilization than previously thought. Crucial "tipping elements," including the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets, Arctic permafrost, and the Amazon rainforest, act as planetary pillars.

Once pushed beyond their critical thresholds, these systems can undergo irreversible changes, triggering a dangerous domino effect where one system's collapse accelerates another. For instance, melting Arctic ice exposes darker ocean surfaces that absorb more heat, which can weaken ocean currents, dry out the Amazon, and ultimately release massive stores of carbon back into the atmosphere.

This cascading feedback loop threatens to push Earth toward a "hothouse" trajectory—a state in which the planet continues to heat up even if humanity completely halts its greenhouse gas emissions.

While researchers cannot yet pinpoint exactly when these individual systems will tip, they stress that waiting for definitive proof is a dangerous gamble, as reversal will be impossible once the threshold is crossed. To avert this catastrophic chain reaction, scientists advocate for immediate cuts to fossil fuel consumption, stronger protections for carbon-storing ecosystems, and the rapid deployment of a global monitoring network to track these planetary tipping points.
