Who controls the American justice system?
On Sunday evening, 2 August, I joined ARISE News to discuss the growing confrontation between President Donald Trump and two Republican senators over Todd Blanche’s nomination as attorney general.
At the centre of the dispute is Trump’s threat to revive a controversial $1.8 billion “anti-weaponisation” fund, which could be used to compensate people the administration considers victims of politically motivated prosecution.
But the larger question goes beyond one nominee or one fund. It concerns the independence of the US justice system and whether the Senate, the courts and the Department of Justice will continue to function as meaningful checks on presidential power.
The critical test is whether decisions about prosecution and compensation are made by independent institutions under transparent public rules—or increasingly through the personal discretion of political leaders.
