Someone asked: Why are Catholic priests so bold and courageous when speaking truth to power?

My answer: A man without a wife or children has nothing to fear. What can you threaten a Catholic priest with? He has no wife, no children, no house, no business, just himself and his God. He has nothing to lose because he has nothing to protect. You can't threaten a man who has already given up everything. That is why dictators, corrupt politicians, and the powerful often fear a courageous priest more than an armed man. A fearless conscience is more dangerous than any weapon. A politician can be bought, a businessman can be pressured, and a family man can be blackmailed through those he loves. But a priest who truly lives his vocation answers to God before he answers to any earthly power. You can't do anything to a man that has sacrificed his lineage.
