The Next Competitive Advantage Isn't Just Technology. It's Energy Strategy.
Every generation of business has been defined by a competitive advantage.
There was a time when access to capital separated market leaders from everyone else. Then technology transformed industries. Today, artificial intelligence is reshaping how organisations operate and compete.
But I believe another competitive advantage is quietly emerging—one that underpins all the others.
Energy strategy.
Across Africa, business leaders are investing in digital transformation, automation, sustainability, and business expansion. Yet one question rarely receives the attention it deserves in the boardroom:
Are our energy decisions creating strategic business value, or are they simply keeping the lights on?
For many organisations, energy is still treated as an operating expense. It becomes a priority only when electricity fails, diesel prices increase, or production is disrupted.
That approach belongs to a different era.
Today, energy influences profitability, productivity, operational resilience, digital transformation, manufacturing performance, customer experience, and long-term competitiveness.
In other words, energy doesn't just support business strategy—it enables business strategy.
This is why I believe business leaders need to stop asking questions like:
• Should we install solar?
• Should we buy another generator?
• Should we convert to CNG?
These are important questions, but they shouldn't come first.
The first question should always be:
"What energy strategy best supports our business strategy?"
When strategy comes first, technology becomes an enabler rather than the objective.
This thinking led me to develop the Strategic Energy Value Framework™ (SEV Framework™)—a practical methodology that helps organisations transform energy from an operating expense into a strategic business asset.
The framework is built on six stages:
✅ Align
✅ Assess
✅ Optimize
✅ Transform
✅ Manage
✅ Lead
Its goal is simple: help organisations create greater business value from every unit of energy they consume.
Because competitive advantage isn't created by owning more equipment.
It's created by making smarter strategic decisions.
In this week's edition of Engineering Smarter Energy, I explore why energy strategy may become one of the defining competitive advantages for African businesses over the next decade.
If you're a CEO, business owner, engineer, policymaker, investor, or simply interested in the future of business and energy, I invite you to read the full article.

I'd like to hear your thoughts.
Does your organisation treat energy as a cost to control—or as a strategic asset that can drive long-term business value?
Let's discuss in the comments.
