What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)?
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is an infection of a woman's reproductive organs, including the uterus (womb), fallopian tubes, and ovaries. It usually occurs when bacteria travel from the vagina or cervix into the upper reproductive tract.
One of the most common causes is untreated sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea, although other bacteria can also cause PID.
Some women may have no symptoms at all, while others may experience lower abdominal pain, unusual vaginal discharge, pain during sex, painful urination, irregular bleeding, or fever.
The good news is that PID is treatable, especially when diagnosed early. However, delaying treatment can lead to serious complications such as chronic pelvic pain, infertility, or ectopic pregnancy.
Don't ignore persistent pelvic pain or unusual symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment can protect your reproductive health.
