When the President says ‘There was hunger in the land before I was born,’ it reveals how disconnected he is from the lived reality of Nigerians. In the 1960s, when I was growing up, our communities practised genuine compassion: farmers left part of their harvest by the roadside for the less privileged, elderly farmers, and neighbours in need. Families shared food freely, and no one went hungry because the community looked after its own. That was the Nigeria many of us knew. We were thought about helping others.
This is why I struggle to believe the President truly understands the country he claims to lead. His background feels distant from the grassroots, and his statements show a lack of awareness of how deeply people are suffering today. A leader must stay close to the people, not carry his burden on the heads of people around him, who are keeping an empty distance from their reality.”
