Makinde Meets Obasanjo, Fayemi Ahead of 2027 Election.
Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, on Sunday met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as political consultations ahead of the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum. The meeting was also attended by former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi & former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, reflecting a cross-party engagement among prominent political figures.
Announcing the visit on his Facebook page, Makinde said discussions focused on key national issues in view of the forthcoming general election. He described Obasanjo's counsel as timely & valuable, expressing appreciation for the ex president's guidance at what he called a crucial period in Nigeria's political journey. Makinde formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election in May & has since intensified consultations across the country.
The meeting comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 polls. While Oyinlola remains a leading figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) & Fayemi is a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Obasanjo has yet to publicly endorse any presidential aspirant. His continued engagement with leaders across political divides has fuelled speculation over the role he may play in shaping the next electoral contest.
Makinde's visit also comes at a time when opposition figures are exploring possible alliances to strengthen their chances against the ruling APC in the 2027 presidential election. In recent weeks, political stakeholders have intensified consultations aimed at forging a broader coalition capable of presenting a united front, with several influential leaders holding strategic meetings across the country.
Political observers say Obasanjo remains one of Nigeria's most influential elder statesmen whose views often carry significant weight in national politics. Although he has maintained a neutral public stance, his consultations with political leaders from different parties continue to attract attention, especially as parties begin to fine-tune their electoral strategies ahead of the campaign season.
The presence of Fayemi, alongside Oyinlola, a PDP leader, underscored the increasingly fluid nature of Nigeria's political landscape, where consultations frequently cut across party lines. Analysts believe such engagements reflect efforts by key political actors to assess emerging alliances and possible areas of cooperation as the 2027 race gathers momentum.
While details of the discussions were not disclosed beyond Makinde's brief statement, the meeting is expected to generate further political interest in the coming weeks. With parties positioning themselves for what promises to be a fiercely contested election, consultations among prominent political figures are likely to remain a defining feature of Nigeria's evolving political landscape.f
