The paradise tree snake uses active body shaping, air control, and fluid midair movement to glide through tropical canopies.
How the Glide Works:
Rib Flare: The snake pulls its belly in and flares its ribs outward to double its width, turning its body into a concave, wing-like ribbon.
Air Undulation: It moves in smooth, continuous S-shaped waves from side to side while airborne to stay stable and generate lift.
Steering: It uses its muscular tail as a dynamic rudder to change direction, adjust its trajectory, and land with precision.
Survival and Behavior:
Distance: It can launch from tall trees and glide horizontally for up to 300 feet (90 meters).
Purpose: Gliding lets the snake quickly escape from tree-dwelling predators and hunt small prey like lizards and frogs without dropping to the forest floor.
