🔵 5 THINGS WE LEARNED FROM CHELSEA’S 2-1 DEFEAT TO TOTTENHAM
1️⃣ Xabi Alonso’s tactical identity is already becoming clear
Alonso wants Chelsea to press aggressively high up the pitch while remaining compact when defending. The idea is exciting, but the players still need time to understand when to press and how to maintain the correct distances between each line.
2️⃣ Chelsea are playing with more purpose in possession
There were noticeably more vertical passes rather than simply keeping the ball for the sake of it. Alonso wants Chelsea to move the ball forward quickly, break defensive lines and attack before the opposition can reorganise.
3️⃣ A new left-back is urgently needed
This position remains an obvious weakness in the squad. Chelsea cannot afford to ignore it. The club must sign a reliable left-back as soon as possible.
4️⃣ Chelsea cannot afford to lose Enzo Fernández
The difference in quality is clear. Romeo Lavia and Dário Essugo have potential, but they are not currently at the same level as Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo. Losing Enzo this summer would leave a massive hole in Chelsea’s midfield.
5️⃣ Marco Palestra may be better suited to playing wing-back
Palestra looks brilliant when going forward, but he still struggles defensively in one-on-one situations. He reminds me slightly of Marcos Alonso, dangerous in attack but vulnerable when isolated defensively. His qualities could make him an excellent wing-back in the right system.
There are plenty of positives for Alonso to build on. What was your biggest takeaway from the game, Chelsea fans? 🔵👇
