GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO EAT YOURSELVES” (Matthew 14:16)
God's Word today reminds us that every human heart longs for something that truly satisfies. Many people spend their lives chasing money, power, pleasure, and worldly success, yet still feel empty.
Through the prophet Isaiah, God lovingly invites everyone: "Come to the water... though you have no money, come!" (Isaiah 55:1-3). The Lord freely offers His grace, mercy, and everlasting covenant. The deepest hunger of the human soul can only be filled by God, whose love never runs dry.
The Responsorial Psalm beautifully reveals God as a compassionate Father who faithfully provides for all creation. "You open wide your hand, O Lord; you grant our desires" (Psalm 145:8-18). God never abandons those who trust Him. He knows our needs before we ask and remains close to everyone who sincerely calls upon Him. His generosity is greater than our fears, and His compassion reaches every person.
In the second reading, St. Paul boldly proclaims that nothing can separate us from God's love in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:35, 37-39). Hardship, sickness, persecution, poverty, suffering, or even death cannot defeat those who remain united with Christ.
Our strength is not found in our circumstances but in God's unchanging love. Christians are called to face life's trials with confidence because Christ has already won the victory for us.
The Gospel (Matthew 14:13-21) shows Jesus responding with compassion to a hungry crowd. Instead of sending them away, He tells His disciples, "Give them something to eat yourselves." Although they had only five loaves and two fish, Jesus blessed the little they offered, multiplied it, and fed over five thousand people, with twelve baskets left over.
This miracle teaches that God can accomplish extraordinary things through our small acts of faith, generosity, and obedience when they are placed in His hands.
The feeding of the five thousand also points to the Holy Eucharist, where Jesus continues to nourish His people with His own Body and Blood. Just as He blessed, broke, and gave the bread to the disciples, He still feeds His Church today at every Mass. Christ calls every believer not only to receive His blessings but also to become instruments of His love by sharing hope, kindness, faith, and material help with those in need.
The greatest miracle in today's Gospel is not only the multiplication of bread but the revelation of God's compassionate heart. Jesus does not ignore human suffering; He sees it, feels it, and responds with mercy. As His disciples today, we are challenged to stop waiting for others to solve the world's problems.
Christ still says to us, "Give them something to eat yourselves." We may not have much, but when we offer our time, talents, prayers, and resources to God, He multiplies them for the good of many.
Today's readings also remind us that true satisfaction comes from Christ alone. The world offers temporary pleasures, but only Jesus satisfies the deepest hunger of the soul and gives eternal life. No difficulty, disappointment, or suffering can separate us from His love. Let us continue to trust in His providence, receive Him worthily in the Holy Eucharist, and become generous witnesses of His mercy by feeding both the physical and spiritual hunger of those around us.
May the Lord who multiplied the loaves increase our faith, strengthen our hope, fill our hearts with His everlasting love, and make us generous instruments of His compassion every day. Amen.
