Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?
Jeremiah 37:19

Zedekiah went to Jeremiah secretly by night when Jerusalem was already under siege and his political comrades have imprisoned Jeremiah, accusing him of wanting to fall to the enemy. The interesting thing here is that the king went to ask Jeremiah for a word from the Lord, when Jeremiah had not kept quiet all these while. Jeremiah repeated the same message to him that he would be captured by the king of Babylon.

Sincerely, I don’t know what else he was expecting Jeremiah to say. Was he thinking that because they’ve now imprisoned Jeremiah, he would change his message to please him and suck up to him? Was he thinking that Jeremiah would now display the same corrupt tendencies that the prophets on his pay roll displayed and tell him what he wanted to hear. I think he just forgot that the person Jeremiah was answerable to is much higher than his throne. He has the power of life and death in his hands.

You will also wonder: Why did he go sneaking around to see Jeremiah at night to ask him for the latest message from God. It just shows one thing: He knew all along that Jeremiah was saying the truth, but it was an inconvenient truth he was not ready to accept and deal with.

Let’s ask ourselves these questions too and be true with our answers: How much of the truth are we ready to accept and walk with even when we do not feel comfortable with it. How much are we ready to say the truth in the face of discomfort to others if that is what they needed to hear?

May God help us to be true to our calling and faithful to His words in our lives in Jesus name.
