Over the past few weeks, videos of individuals I consider preachers of hate have continued to trend across social media. These are religious leaders who use their platforms to incite hatred and killings rather than promote peace. Masquerading as spokesmen for God, they spread messages that intimidate (weak minds), fuel division, inflame passions, and encourage violence. In doing so, they not only endanger lives but also erode the conscience of their followers and poison the minds of the masses.
As long as influential individuals, especially some religious leaders, continue to promote ideologies that bring division and intolerance, Nigeria will find it difficult to overcome its religious challenges.
It is deeply saddening when preachers use their platform to encourage hostility toward people of another faith. Such messages can mislead followers, deepen violence, and undermine national unity. Religious extremism is not confined to one faith, though; it can be found among individuals in different religious communities.
Nigeria's strength is found in its diversity. What we need is mutual respect, understanding, and love, not hate. Only by embracing love and tolerance can we coexist peacefully and build a stronger nation.
Happy Sunday.
