*JESUS OUR ADVOCATE (9)*
1st John 2:1 My little children, these things write I to you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
Vs 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
This refers to Believers. Jesus is
our Advocate with the Father when we sin, So the Holy Ghost knew that sons of God would sin.
How does God discipline his children?
When we sin, it is a family disciplinary process. The church judges itself. That is why Paul said someone among them should judge.
2nd Corinthians 13:10 Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction.
He says he will correct and rebuke. He says he will use sharpness. We are not to tolerate sin.
Hebrews 12:5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh to you as to children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
Vs 6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
Vs 7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
Vs 8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
Vs 9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live?
Vs 10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
Vs 11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness to them which are exercised thereby.
The word, 'Chastening' means to correct by teaching / instruction. That you are a son doesn't mean you do perfect things.
Chastening means something wrong is corrected. The chastening is to make you grow.
How does the Father do it?
He gave gifts unto men. The gifts will use the written word. By preaching and teaching, by using the written word. None of the correction is by something spectacular or supernatural mysterious experiences.
Some believers in Corinth sinned and there was no correction until Paul came. God didn't deal with them by sickness.
Two things:
1. There was an awareness they sinned; judgment of what they did
2. Correction as to what they did.
They refused to act on the word, but they are sons. There was correction. It was a family discipline done in love. A correction in love is known by application of principles of the new covenant.
Sin is anything contrary to God's word.
The issue with the 1st Corinthians 5 brother was not that he did it, he did it openly.Paul said 'Destroy the flesh', not 'his flesh'. 'The flesh 'refer to carnality. So, Paul was exercising judgment and discipline on the man's conduct.
By public censure and public upbraiding, we judge issues in the family. When believers sin, God judges in the church. He doesn't use unbelievers.
Romans 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
He says to mark them. These are those who create sects in the church. It is done by the written word. What we have to do is already written.
Titus 3:10 A man that is a heretick after the first and second admonition reject;
An heretic is someone who says things to create division. Heresy is in:
1. Words
2. Sect / division
There are actions we take by the spirit of God towards sin. There is a system in the family that corrects and does not condone sin. So we have a duty towards a fellow believer who lives in sin.
