Well, this is my reply.
I understand the frustration people are expressing, and no one can deny that our healthcare system has many challenges. Shortage of staff, poor funding, and overcrowded hospitals make it difficult for both patients and healthcare workers.
That said, if a doctor is officially on duty, they are expected to be available to attend to patients unless they are a doctor on call or have been properly relieved. Patients who come to the hospital deserve timely medical attention, especially in emergencies. When that doesn't happen, it's a serious issue that should be investigated and addressed.
However, no matter how painful or frustrating the situation is, assaulting or threatening healthcare workers is never justified. From the reports about the Adeoyo incident, the relatives crossed the line by allegedly attacking a nurse. The nurse was not responsible for the absence of a doctor, and every healthcare worker deserves to work in a safe environment free from violence, intimidation, or abuse.
As we advocate for patients' rights, we must also remember that healthcare workers are human beings with rights too. Nurses have the right to dignity, respect, safety, and protection while carrying out their duties. We cannot demand respect for patients while denying that same respect to the professionals caring for them.
Tomorrow, I'll be talking about patients' rights—not because our healthcare system is perfect, but because knowing our rights is the first step toward demanding better healthcare. And as we discuss patients' rights, let's also remember that nurses and other healthcare professionals have rights too. Respect should go both ways.
