The Federal Government has praised Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, following the formal handover of the first Nigerian Air Force Administrative Complex in Umuahia, a landmark security project delivered by the Abia State Government.
At the ceremony attended by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), and the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, Governor Otti described the project as a practical demonstration of what can be achieved when the Federal and State Governments work together to secure lives and property. He said every resident and visitor in Abia deserves to live in safety, stressing that protecting people remains one of the primary responsibilities of government.
The Governor welcomed the Nigerian Air Force to Abia and announced that the State has already provided 120 hectares of land at Nsulu for the construction of a permanent Air Force Base, while residential accommodation has also been arranged to ensure personnel settle in quickly and commence operations without delay.
Governor Otti thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the leadership of the Nigerian Air Force, General Christopher Musa (Rtd.), and the late Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja for their support during the difficult security period that followed the killing of soldiers in Abia in May 2024. He explained that his administration intends to build a lasting partnership with the Nigerian Air Force not only in security but also in education and human capital development. According to him, investments in roads, schools, healthcare, economic opportunities and security are interconnected because a peaceful environment creates the confidence needed for businesses to grow and communities to prosper.
In his remarks, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described Governor Otti's support as an extraordinary contribution to national security, noting that it was the first time since assuming office that a State Governor had personally delivered infrastructure of such scale to the Nigerian Air Force. He said the new administrative complex would strengthen operational efficiency, improve response to security threats across Abia and the South East, and provide officers and men with modern facilities required to discharge their constitutional duties.
Air Marshal Aneke also disclosed that personnel posted to Abia had been instructed to work closely with the people and contribute positively to the peace and development of the State, while assuring that the request for a military training institution in Abia would receive favourable consideration.
Also speaking, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd.), congratulated Governor Otti and the people of Abia for making a major investment in Nigeria's security architecture. He reminded security personnel deployed to the State to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and to ensure that their presence brings greater peace and confidence to residents.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Lands, Mr. Chaka Ikenna Chukwumerije and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander MacDonald Uba (Rtd.), explained that the project was conceived as part of Governor Otti's long term security strategy. They noted that the State Government acquired and allocated the land, issued the Certificate of Occupancy, and supervised the construction of the purpose built complex, which includes an auditorium, conference hall, clinic, armoury, registry, offices, kitchen, canteens, guardroom, quarter guard, gatehouse, observatory post and other operational facilities.
The ceremony was attended by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribeole, alongside members of the State Executive Council and other senior government officials.
