A child who grows up knowing his father won't stumble when he finally sees him. He'll run.

But a child who only ever heard about his father โ€” from uncles, from stories, from photographs passed around โ€” that child freezes. He shakes a stranger's hand. He calls him "sir."

Job knew this. After the storm, after the friends' speeches, after all his own questions, he says it plainly:

"I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee." (Job 42:5)

Everything he'd been told about God collapsed into an actual encounter. And it changed him, because hearing about someone and knowing them are not the same event.

This is the quiet danger for many of us who call God Father. We know things about Him. We've heard the sermons. We can quote the verses other people quoted to us. But we've never sat with His word ourselves long enough for it to become familiarity instead of information.

Paul didn't want facts about Christ. He said he counted everything as loss "for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord" (Philippians 3:8) โ€” and even after everything he'd already given up, he kept pressing to know Him more.

Jesus said it even more soberly. Some will stand before Him having prophesied in His name, cast out devils in His name, done many wonderful works โ€” and He will say, "I never knew you" (Matthew 7:23). Not "you didn't perform enough." Knew. That's the language of relationship, not resume.

So here's the question worth sitting with: if you met Him today, would it feel like a reunion โ€” or an introduction?

The cry of "Abba, Father" in Romans 8:15 doesn't come from a rรฉsumรฉ of correct doctrine. It comes from familiarity. From time spent. From a child who has actually been in the room with his Father, not just heard stories about the house He lives in.

Don't let your knowledge of God stay secondhand. Go and meet Him for yourself.
