Today, a colleague shared something that really made me think.
She said her parents didn’t really know their exact dates of birth. Back then, there were no calendars in their village, so an older sibling would simply write the dates down on paper and keep them somewhere safe. Years later, when the family went looking for those records, some of the children found theirs, while others couldn’t.
It made me realize how much we take for granted.
Many of the things we consider normal today—having a birth certificate, knowing your date of birth, going to school, having access to healthcare, even being properly documented—were privileges many of our parents never had.
That is why I have so much respect for parents who work tirelessly to give their children opportunities they never had. Parenting isn’t just about bringing a child into the world; it’s about being committed to giving that child a better start than you had, as much as you possibly can.
And as children, sometimes we need to pause and appreciate the sacrifices our parents made. Many of them were figuring life out without the resources and opportunities we now enjoy.
If you’re going to have children, let it be because you’re ready to commit to raising them with love, care, and the best opportunities you can provide. No parent can give a perfect life, but every child deserves a parent who genuinely tries to make their future better than their own past.
Sometimes, the greatest inheritance isn’t wealth—it’s a parent who chose to break the cycle.
