The woman I thought was proud turned out to be carrying the heaviest burden.

Every morning, I'd see the same woman at the bus stop.

She never greeted anyone.

She never smiled.

She'd simply stare into the distance until her bus arrived.

To be honest, I thought she was proud.

One morning, I decided not to judge her.

I smiled and said,

"Good morning."

She looked at me.

Smiled back.

Then quietly said,

"I'm sorry if I've seemed rude. My husband passed away two weeks ago. Some days, I don't even realize people are talking to me."

I didn't know what to say.

The woman I'd labeled as arrogant was simply trying to survive her grief.

I got on my bus with a heavy heart.

That morning taught me something I'll never forget.

Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.

Kindness costs nothing.

But it can mean everything to someone who's barely holding themselves together.

Since then, I've tried to replace assumptions with compassion.

Because sometimes, the person who needs your kindness the most is the one who seems least likely to ask for it.

Have you ever misunderstood someone, only to discover they were silently carrying a burden?
