Diagnosis & Treatment of Sickle Cell Disease

Early diagnosis of sickle cell disease can make a big difference. Simple blood tests, such as genotype testing and haemoglobin electrophoresis, help identify the condition early, allowing treatment to begin before serious complications develop. In many places, newborn screening also helps detect the disease shortly after birth.

Although there is no universal cure yet, sickle cell disease can be effectively managed. Treatment may include pain-relieving medications during crises, antibiotics to prevent infections, folic acid supplements, regular medical check-ups, blood transfusions when necessary, and medicines like hydroxyurea to reduce the frequency of pain episodes. For some eligible patients, a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant may offer a potential cure.

With early diagnosis, proper treatment, and healthy lifestyle habits, people living with sickle cell disease can enjoy longer, healthier, and more productive lives.
