The Nigerian Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has applauded Governor Alex C. Otti OFR, for providing the facilities that will enable the Nigerian Air Force to begin full operations in Abia State.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Governor at Government House, Umuahia, shortly after the maiden South East Security Summit convened by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), Air Marshal Aneke said the office complex, residential accommodation and over 120 hectares of land donated by the Abia State Government for a permanent Air Force base represent one of the most significant commitments by any State Government to national security. According to him, the investment will strengthen security operations across Abia and the wider South East by improving operational readiness and reducing response time to criminal activities.
The Air Force Chief said his visit to Abia gave him the opportunity to witness first hand the remarkable transformation taking place under Governor Otti's leadership. He observed that the roads, healthcare facilities and other infrastructure projects have changed the old perception of the State, describing the Governor as a visionary leader who understands that economic prosperity can only flourish where lives and property are adequately protected.
Air Marshal Aneke added that the facilities provided for the Nigerian Air Force would improve the welfare of officers and their families, support effective deployment of personnel and equipment, and reduce the burden on the Federal Government. He further described Governor Otti as a strategic leader with the foresight to invest in long term security at a time when many would not fully appreciate its value.
Responding, Governor Otti thanked the Chief of the Air Staff for approving the establishment of a Nigerian Air Force base in Abia and assured him that his administration would continue to provide every support required for its successful take off.
The Governor maintained that security remains the foundation upon which every other aspect of development depends, noting that investment, commerce and social progress cannot thrive in an unsafe environment. He stressed that although maintaining security requires substantial resources, the cost of insecurity is far greater, adding that his government would continue to prioritise the protection of lives and property.
Governor Otti also disclosed that the newly completed facilities would be formally handed over to the Nigerian Air Force the following day, while expressing appreciation to Air Marshal Aneke for already approving the deployment of personnel to the State.
The Governor received the Air Force Chief in the company of the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba , PhD, and the Special Adviser on Security, Navy Commander MacDonald Uba (Rtd.), as both parties pledged to deepen cooperation in making Abia one of the safest destinations for residents, businesses and investors in Nigeria.
