His Excellency, the Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex C. Otti, OFR, on Thursday 30 July ,declared that lasting peace remains the foundation for economic growth and social progress as he hosted the South East Regional Security Summit 2026 at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia.
The summit, organised by the Federal Ministry of Defence in partnership with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South East), brought together political leaders, security chiefs and key stakeholders to chart a common strategy for tackling insecurity in the region. Governor Otti described the gathering as timely, especially with political activities gathering momentum, stressing that elections should never become an excuse for violence or intimidation. He said Abia and the South East must continue to build on improved intelligence sharing, modern surveillance, support for security agencies and public participation to ensure criminals have no room to operate.
Representing the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar'Adua, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, assured participants that the National Assembly would continue to provide the legal framework required to strengthen Nigeria's security institutions. He said no region can confront security threats alone and called for stronger partnerships to protect lives, strengthen national unity and restore public confidence.
Messages of solidarity also came from the Governors of Imo, Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi States, represented respectively by Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai and Rt. Hon. Moses Odunwa, who commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the service chiefs, the Federal Ministry of Defence and Governor Otti for creating a platform that promotes collective action against insecurity across the South East.
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, urged South East leaders to deepen intelligence sharing, strengthen cooperation among States and pursue constitutional reforms capable of addressing the region's security concerns through both security operations and community based solutions.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, said the Federal Government is combining military operations with economic development, infrastructure, media literacy and community engagement to restore lasting peace across the region, while commending Governor Otti's leadership.
Earlier, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), described the summit as a fresh opportunity to secure the South East and protect its reputation as a centre of enterprise and innovation.
Delivering the keynote address, former Chief of Army Staff, General Azubuike Onyeabo Ihejirika (Rtd.), cautioned against treating entire communities as criminals because of the actions of a few individuals, warning that such an approach weakens public trust and discourages intelligence gathering.
The summit was attended by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, senior security experts, traditional rulers, members of the clergy and other distinguished stakeholders from across the region.
