11. Lake Retba (Lac Rose) – Senegal
Lake Retba, also known as Lac Rose(Pink Lake), is one of Senegal's most iconic natural landmarks. Located about 35 kilometers (22 miles) northeast of Dakar, the lake has fascinated locals and visitors for centuries because of its unusual pink color and exceptionally high salt content.
A Lake Formed by Nature
Lake Retba was created naturally over thousands of years. It was once connected to the Atlantic Ocean, but shifting sand dunes gradually separated it from the sea. As the connection closed, seawater became trapped in the basin.
Over time, the region's hot climate caused large amounts of water to evaporate, leaving behind extremely high concentrations of salt. Today, the lake's salinity can rival that of the Dead Sea, allowing people to float easily on its surface.
Why Is the Lake Pink?
The lake's famous pink color comes from a microscopic algae called Dunaliella salina. This algae thrives in salty environments and produces a reddish-orange pigment to protect itself from intense sunlight.
During the dry season, when the salt concentration is highest, the pigment becomes more visible, giving the lake its striking pink appearance. During wetter months, the color often fades to a lighter pink or even a bluish hue.
The Salt Harvesting Tradition
For generations, Lake Retba has supported the livelihoods of local communities through salt production.
Every day, workers enter the lake in wooden boats to collect salt from the bottom using simple hand tools. Before entering the highly saline water, many cover their skin with **shea butter** to help protect it from irritation.
The harvested salt is piled into large white mounds along the shoreline, where it dries in the sun before being sold across Senegal and neighboring West African countries.
Today, thousands of tons of salt are harvested from the lake each year, making it one of Senegal's most important salt-producing regions.
A Global Tourist Attraction
Lake Retba gained international recognition because of its extraordinary pink waters and unique landscape. For many years, it also served as the traditional finishing point of the Paris–Dakar Rally, one of the world's most famous off-road endurance races. This brought global attention to the lake and helped establish it as a major tourist destination.
