Inspiring Mathematicians 50: Bernhard Riemann
Bernhard Riemann (1826–1866) was a German mathematician whose profound ideas transformed geometry, analysis, and number theory, laying the foundations for much of modern mathematics and theoretical physics.
He introduced Riemannian geometry, a revolutionary framework for studying curved spaces that later became the mathematical language of Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity.
Riemann also developed the Riemann integral, made pioneering contributions to complex analysis through Riemann surfaces, and introduced the Riemann zeta function, whose associated Riemann Hypothesis remains one of the most important unsolved problems in mathematics.
Although he published relatively few papers during his short life, their extraordinary depth reshaped the study of geometry, topology, differential equations, and mathematical physics.
Today, Riemann is regarded as one of history's greatest mathematical visionaries, whose ideas continue to influence fields ranging from cosmology and quantum physics to cryptography and data science.
