Nigeria has experienced periods of food insecurity, poverty, and malnutrition under successive governments, and hunger has existed throughout human history. However, the historical truth of the statement does not answer the question Nigerians are asking today: What is the government's responsibility for current living conditions? President Tinubu is correct that hunger did not begin with his administration.
But history is context, not a defence. The measure of leadership is not whether a president inherited hardship; it is whether fewer Nigerians are hungry, better fed, and more economically secure by the end of the administration than at the beginning. Ultimately, Nigerians will judge this government not by explanations of the past, but by measurable improvements in their daily lives.
